Sequel to the Upper Legislative Chamber’s threat to hold the Attorney-General of the Federation, AGF, Abubakar Malami, in contempt, if he fails again to appear before its Investigative Committee, President Muhammadu Buhari, is set to face an impeachment plot.
There were indications on Tuesday Night, that the National Leader of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Bola Tinubu, initiated a high profile meeting with other party leaders, in a view to stop the Senate.
According to news report, the Senate had on Tuesday, July 12, threatened to invoke its legislative rule on Malami, following the explanation by the Chairman Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Right and Legal Matters, Senator David Umaru, on the circumstances surrounding the failure of the AGF to honour the invitation of his Committee.
Senate President, Bukola Saraki, who did not allow the debate on the matter, insisted that the AGF, must appear before the Committee, in line with the resolution of the senate.
Aside, there are strong indications that some Senators held series of meetings behind closed doors, before the Tuesday’s Executive session at the home of Senator Aliyi Wamakko (APC Sokoto), of which a plot to impeach the President was allegedly hatched.
According to News reports, those championing the impeachment move include: Senator Dino Melaye, Senator Danjuma Goje, Senator Jibrin Barau, Senator Isa Misau and Senator Peter Nwaoboshi.
Melaye, during the meeting, was reported to have insisted that the AGF must be brought before the Senate, to be thoroughly grilled and humiliated, for charging the Senate leadership to court, over alleged forgery of the Senate Rules book.
Also, Melaye was said to have equally threatened to deal with any of his colleagues, who shows up in court to testify against Saraki and his Deputy, Ike Ekweremadu. Meanwhile, he further threatened to beat up Senator Oluremi Tinubu, wife of the National Leader of the APC, who had urged the Senate to be diplomatic in handling the forgery case against its leadership.
Following recent developments, the power tussle between the Executive and the Legislature, might degenerate into a major crisis, as the President is likely to face an imminent impeachment, if the logjam persists.
Among those equally summoned, is the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, SGF, Babachir Lawal, over his recent statements on the implementation of the 2016 budget and the National Conference report.
